Visiting Sonoma Valley?
Sonoma Valley doesn't get the international acclaim and attention among wine enthusiasts that Napa Valley does, but it is still a world-famous wine region in its own right. If time and opportunity allow, a visit to the Sonoma Valley will be rewarded with some outstanding wine tastings, accomodations and dining.
Here are a few of our favorite things to do and places to stay in the Sonoma Valley.
Wineries
Gloria Ferrer Caves and Vineyards: 707-996-7256 (gloriaferrer.com). A historic winery, known for its sparkling wine (please do not call it Champagne). Enjoy spectacular views at the outside tables where you can taste 16 different Spanish-influenced wines. They have 7 sparkling wines to choose from - we like the Rose sparkling wine.
Kunde Family Estate: 707-833-5501 (kunde.com) The Kunde family has been in the wine business for over 100 years! They have a fantastic tasting room, near a shaded picnic area nestled under majestic valley oaks, and reflecting pool and fountains. If you're looking for a more private and exclusive wine tasting experience, book some time in the Kinneybrook Room. Featuring the sustainably-farmed, 100% estate grown Kunde Grand Estate Series, the Kinneybrook Room offers sit-down service that is sophisticated and welcoming. “Many visitors to wine country seek a personalized and private winetasting experience,” said fourth-generation winegrower, Marcia Kunde Mickelson. “They want to sit down and relax, taste the very best, and learn something more in-depth about the wines and winery. The Kinneybrook Room will do just that—educate and entertain in a contemporary, wine country setting.” The Kinneybrook Room focuses on Kunde Grand Estate Series Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Century Vines Zinfandel, and select small-lot wines. Overlooking the 104 year old estate’s beautiful Vineyard Terrace, the room’s design appointments include alabaster chandeliers, a handcrafted bar created from reclaimed wood and hammered copper, luxurious leather sofas and high-back chairs set on hand-forged wrought iron bases. Tasting fees are $20.00 per person; $10.00 for wine club members.
Nicholson Ranch: 707-938-8822 (nicholsonranch.com) Looking for that perfect wine country moment? How about a picnic by a lake? The Nicholson Ranch Tasting Room offers a delicious assortment of meats, cheeses, crackers and spreads to go along with a bottle of Nicholson Ranch wine. There are picnic tables with shade umbrellas, or you can spread your blankets out on the lawn. The lake is home to largemouth bass, catfish, and the occasional river otter. Blue Herons, White Egrets, and an assortment of ducks visit regularly, while Red-Tail Hawks soar overhead. All this, and a glass of fine wine...it's really hard to beat. Nicholson Ranch is a small family-owned artisan winery situated on 160 windswept acres midway between the acclaimed Sonoma and Napa Valleys. Noted for sumptuous Pinot Noir, Nicholson Ranch boasts panoramic views of Sonoma Valley and Carneros. The winery is impressively elegant yet gracious and welcoming. Nicholson Ranch is most noted for their Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
J Vineyards: 707-431-3646 (jwine.com) J makes some of the most sought-after pinot noir and sparkling wine in the world. Visiting the winery is bound to please and impress. The team at J is world-renown for their cool-climate winemaking skills. A visit to J is notable for their estate wines and impressive food pairings. Drop into the award winning Bubble Room or enjoy your wine tasting outdoors on their elegant J Terrace. Don't forget to ask about Essence - no, not the magazine, their excellent food and wine pairing menu. It's a good idea to call for reservations first!
